회사 생활에서 동료에게 한 마디 던지면 멋있어보일 것 같은 숙어들

 다들 일상 영어보다는 한 단계 높은 느낌의 영어를 구사하고 싶어들 한다. 그럴 때 도움이 되는 어구들을 모아서 준비해보았다.  어구에 따라 약간 올드한 느낌의 어구도 있긴 있다.

정답을 하나씩 맞춰보자.

 

1. to put in a nutshell - 호두껍질에다가 넣어라 라는 뜻이다. 그것은 무슨말일까? '요약만 간단히 말하면' 정도의 뜻이다. 호두껍질에다가 넣자면~ 이런 느낌으로 받아들이면 된다. 약간 informal한 느낌이 있다고 하니 상사에게 사용하지는 말자. 동료나 부하직원에게 정도 덜 공식적인 자리에서 사용하자.

 

 예시1) This equipment is very complicated, but to put in a nutshell it works exactly like a microwave machine ! 

 예시2) Hey, stop the presentation. to put it in a nutshell !

 

2. to get straight to the point - 이건 조금 쉬운 느낌이었다. point로 바로 가자라는 뜻이라서 다른 정보 듣고 싶지 않은 상태에서 핵심만 말하는 정도의 느낌으로 받아들이면 된다.

 

 예시1) OK, I'll get straight to the point. I'm afraid we are going to have to let you go.  (let you go = fire) 

 예시2) I like the person who are getting straight to the point.

 

 3. to hear it on the grapevine - 포도밭에서 그것을 듣다 라고 직역이 되는데, 찌라시나 루머 같은거를 들을 때 이렇게 말한다. 

  

 예시1) I have heard it on the grapevine ! Our company will be merged !

 

 4. to put you in the picutre - 같은 사진안에 너를 놓아라라고 번역이 되는데, 한국 회사에서 보통 follow up으로 쓰이는 단어와 비슷하다고 보면된다. 정보 상태나 비즈니스 현황을 공유해주는 것 이 정도로 받아들이면 된다.

 

 예시1) I'll put you in the picture as soon as a final decision has been made.

 예시2) Some important decisions were taken at yesterday's meeting. Let me put you in the picture.

 예시3) Don't forget to put me in the picture !  (이메일 참조 끼라고 할 떄도 많이 쓴다고 함)

 

 5. to get the wrong end of the stick - stick 맨 끝에서 틀리다 라는 뜻인데, 오해하다라는 뜻과 똑같다. (misunderstand)

 

  예시1) If you think our problem is charteristic then you have gotten the wrong end of the stick. 

  예시2) Really? I think you have gotten the wrong end of the stick !

  예시3) When I was in university, I used to get the wrong end of the stick about girlfriend's behavior.

 

 6. to be on the same page (=wavelength) - 같은 페이지에 있게 해주라는 것인데, 비슷한 생각을 하고 있거나 비슷한 결이거나 잘 맞는 것 같을 때, you are similar to me. 라는 표현말고, We are on the same page ! 라고 말하면 와 우리 딱 같은 생각 중이야 이런 식으로 활용할 수 있겠다.

 

 예시1) You and your boss seem to agree on most things. Yes, we are on the same page. 

 예시2) Do you also like ocean? Oh my god, we are on the same page !

 

 7. can't make head or tail of it - 그것의 머리 혹은 꼬리를 만들 수 없어 ! 라는 말은 뭔가 완성이 안되는 것이다. 이건 이해를 못했다라는 뜻이라고 보면된다. 오해가 아니라 그냥 이해를 못한거다. 두서가 없다라고 봐도 될 것 같다.

 

 예시1) This report makes no sense at all. I can't make head or tail of it. (I don't understand anything)

 예시2) Is this the result of experiments? I can't make head or tail of it.

 

 8. to talk at cross purpose - 목적을 건너서 말하고 있다는 것은 지금 말하는 것이나 생각하고 있는 것이 다르다는 것이다. 'We are not on the same page.'라고 생각할 수 있겠다.

 

 예시1) I think we are talking at cross purposes. I mean this month, not next month. 

 

 9. to beat about the bush - 덤불에 대해서 떄리다 라는 것은 덤불은 뭔가 넓고 수북한 곳을 때린다는 것이다. 뭔가 핵심 이 아니라 안 중요한 것들을 이리저리 논하는 것을 말한다.

 

 예시1) He never gives me a straight answer. He is always beating about the bush.

 예시2) How can I solve this problem? They are just beating about the bush.

 

 10. to get our wires crossed - 이것도 cross purpose와 같은 뜻이다. wire가 꼬였다는 것은 지금 말하는게 다르다는 것과 같다. 

 

 예시1) Everyone arrived for the meeting at different times. We must have gotten our wires crossed. 

 예시2) Let's decide what we have to do. If not, we might get our wiers crossed.
